How DARPA Leverages the Descartes Labs Platform
Food insecurity is often a primary cause of instability and civil unrest for many countries around the world.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) leveraged the Descartes Labs platform to proactively identify potential food shortages in the Middle East and North Africa using wheat crop yield predictions.
Through a combination of multi-modal geospatial and remote sensing data such as optical and radar imagery, as well as fine-grain weather measurements, Descartes Labs was able to build models for DARPA to help them understand how agricultural outputs would evolve over time.
Descartes Labs was able to map small grains in the study area
with 91% overall accuracy, achieving high accuracies months
before harvest.
